Cotabato, KOMPAS.com - The death toll in a fierce gun battle on Thursday (7/26/2012) between government forces and the Abu Sayyaf in southern Philippines to 19, a military officer said Friday (07/27/2012).
At least nine soldiers and 10 Abu Sayyaf members were killed. Meanwhile, government troops suffered 16 wounded in clashes in the jungle town of Sumisip, Basilan province, since Thursday.
The military said the army also found that eight rebels were wounded. One group leader identified as Wyms deputy, former co rubber plantations who had joined the group of Abu Sayyaf.
He was believed to be the man who led the fighting, the military spokesman said the Randolph Cabangbang.
Cabangbang said the government casualty figures are the result of two battles that triggered Thursday morning and another in the afternoon when the army clashed with the 50 gunmen had ties with the Abu Sayyaf.
He said, in the first battle of the eight military personnel were killed and two others on Thursday afternoon. Cabangbang said the operation took place as government forces track the insurgents in the mountains of Sumisip.
